The bench-and-counter machine-shop crowd — the one- or two-man shop that picks up shop-closure pallets and shop liquidations, benches what it takes in-house, drops rigging on a flatbed, and flips into a regional buyer network or a tooling dealer. Lothound ranks machine-tool surplus against trailing 60-day comparable sales and shows the landed margin before bid. These three worked lots are the kind that come up on a Tuesday and clear by Friday.
Each lot below is the kind of public-surplus pull a small shop benches in a normal week. The comparable band is trailing 60-day sales by category, refurb is what your bench time actually runs (spindle recert, way-cover, gib strip, half-nut swap), freight and buyer’s premium are what the invoice shows. Sample margin is what’s left on the table before shop overhead.
Three-unit pallet from a community-college CNC program closure. One 2018 control (pre-NGC firmware), one 2020 NGC box, one 2021 NGC box. Tool-length offsets loaded, batteries replaced. One spindle has a chatter note from a shop-log sheet; the other two pass the spindle-taper air test.
Bench in-shop. Pull the front covers on the chatter spindle, run an indicator sweep ($180) and a fresh way-cover ($120) on the affected axis. Drop-ship the 2018 control to a HAAS-affiliated retrofitter only if a buyer lands; sell as-is NGC units to your existing dealer channel.
$7,220 landed · $7,900 expected retail → $680 sample margin (post-refurb, pre-shop overhead).
Two-head pallet-lot pull from a vocational-program tool-room turn-in. One J-head, one slightly later 2J-head variant. Both 3-phase 220V, both with a working servo power feed (one needs the limit dog reset). Lead-screw backlash within shop tolerance on one; the other reads 0.012″ on the X axis and is the refurb candidate.
In-shop on the 0.012″ head — X-axis leadscrew adjustment, gib strip, and a fresh knee-way scrape ($340 in bench time, parts on hand). Sell the good head as-tested; ship both with a serialized runout sheet.
$3,110 landed · $3,400 expected retail → $290 sample margin (post-refurb, pre-shop overhead).
Estate pull from a one-owner home-shop machinist. 3-phase motor has been swapped for a single-phase VFD (RPC equivalent) — well documented. Bed ways show minor wear, no ridges. One chuck jaw is at replacement interval; leadscrew has the 2018 vintage half-nuts still in service.
Drop-ship the head for a fresh half-nut set ($140) and chuck-jaw replacement ($110). Bench the bed with a 6″ indicator on a freshly scraped test bar ($200) before listing as-tested.
$4,390 landed · $4,950 expected retail → $560 sample margin (post-refurb, pre-shop overhead).
Machine-tool pulls are not one vertical — CNC VMCs, manual knee mills, and engine lathes each move on different math. Lothound ranks each category on the signals that actually drive margin for a small machine-shop owner.
